I Have Goals, Now What?

My commitment in these essays is to provide value that you can make immediate use of in your life. Last week we spoke about goals, a topic that I will revisit over and over. It works to have them. But once we do have them, what do we do then?

Let’s assume that we have our goals and that we’ve laid out affirmations for each goal and even say them rigorously, with emotion. We even have visualized each goal and visualize accomplishing them daily. Not only that, we have an overall vision of our life, a purpose, a mission. So?

What then? Are we now ready to get to work to accomplish each goal? I’d say there are still a few things to do before we get to work. First, we likely have a number of goals. Now, I hate to say this, but we shouldn’t work on all of them simultaneously. There are some things we can do that could have a positive impact on all of them, but let’s be specific. So pick one goal that you’re going to work on.

Why? Well, for one thing, eventually we’re going to get time involved. And it’s hard enough to schedule one activity without having to balance it with other goal-seeking activities. Second, the truth is that going for a goal often dislocates your life. Let’s minimize that effect.

Now, the next thing we should is figure out what resources we have to accomplish this goal; what could we have and how cen we get them? What support systems do we have or can we create that will support us to accomplish that goal? As a coach, I’m only one possible support system.

Finally – and this is the most important thing, that most people don’t know. I ask my clients, when they don’t know this: If someone called you and asked you how to get to St. Louis, what would you say? And, after floundering, they realize they should ask: “where are you?”

And that’s where I’ll stop now. For example,. a friend wants to run a mile in 10 minutes. How different is achieving that goal after she tells me that she has run a marathon and that she’s over 50.

My Goal
My goal is to give you value
But it’s 6AM on Monday
And I said I’ll write a poem.
My goal is giving val
And I still am half asleep
I sneezed away my Sunday
And have commitments left to keep
My goal is giving value
And at last I’m half way home
