Independence Day
This is written before, but you’ll see it almost a week after Independence Day – our annual picnic & fireworks day. But to what degree do we think of it as a day that celebrates our independence?
We may pay attention to our national independence and our personal political independence, our civil liberties, our respect for other’s civil liberties and independence.
But what do you mean by independence, by your personal independence? This is complex and touches all aspects of our lives. It often underlies many people’s goals – not only to exercise independence, but to have others respond to it.
Do we give up independence with marriage and parenthood? To what degree do we control our independence in earning a living? When we have a job? When we own a business? When we’re professionals?
What’s our relationship between our independence and our wealth?
Do we exercise our independence when we work for a cause or do we give up some for it.
What’s the relationship between our independence and our community?
I think we rarely think about much of this, except at some decision points. Send me your thoughts about this.
